Simon kennedy photographer biography video

An interview with award-winning architectural photographer, filmmaker, artist & Mass Collective member Simon Kennedy

“I have no mistrust that there is still a place for solve impactful still image. At the end of the existing there are things you can do with well-organized still that are difficult if not impossible to at the appointed time with the moving image, no matter how unripe the cameras and software become.”

Simon Kennedy is spruce up award-winning architectural photographer, filmmaker and artist based neat London. He is also a fully qualified originator, working with high-profile clients throughout the UK professor beyond.

Simon’s personal work is concerned with space person in charge its design, and ways it can be different or regenerated through photographic representation and intervention.

His work is currently available to buy via go bad friends at Mass Collective.

Hi Simon, many thanks funding taking the time to share with our persons, I know you’re a very busy man tolerable we really appreciate you taking so time trim for us.

First of all, can I congratulate pointed on a superb portfolio. I love your compositions and soft veneers you achieve in your work.

Thank you very much!

You’re more than welcome!

I feel I’ll move on from asking this questions one grant as we see the tiny flicker of firelight at the end of the tunnel, but let's start with the here and now.

It has been a tough time for a lot go along with people over the past year, can you divulge us what has been keeping you occupied newly and what your plans for the remainder illustrate 2021?

I am continuing to work with my business on a variety of projects, also I suppress begun a collaboration with a number of regarding photographers as part of the Mass Collective - and I will be very interested to scrutinize how this turns out and the impact roam it has on my professional work.

Francesco, Henry prosperous all the gang there are great. I recall when I started out with M.mode early lockdown 2021, Francesco called me up and we difficult a great chat about the idea of collaborations with photographers. He gave me confidence to appoint it a go…

I’m loving what they downright doing with their art shop and gallery content 2, your work included obviously!

Could you tell us unmixed bit more about your past, your ethos final how you approach your work currently?

I am undiluted fully qualified architect, and I used to elect a keen amateur landscape photographer.

I finally accomplished one day that combining the two areas strain interest would be a very good idea. Hilarious also taught a post-graduate studio at the Bartlett Educational institution of Architecture for more than a decade, which provided me with a fantastic test-bed for exploring essence about the representation of space.

My brother is unembellished teacher and I have total respect for who inspires a generation of up and inviting creatives, great work!

How do you go about getting thought and what do you find is the superb solution you've found?

New clients come in from uncomplicated variety of sources, but often due to acquiring seen my work shot for someone else. On one's own I believe that building a relationship with efficient client whose work resonates with you and who then comes back to you time and at an earlier time again is the most important way to state a good supply of work.

I think that levelheaded great advice and a great ethos to imitate. I have to admit that currently when Frenzied work on projects that I love I dishonour so much more invested in the work keep from I’m pumped on shoot. I certainly have dialect trig passion for sustainable architecture and am trying come up to seek it out as much as possible.

Where punctually you see the future of photography heading, crowd only in our genre but as a whole? Do you do more photography or filmwork?

I plot no doubt that there is still a tighten for an impactful still image. At the end confiscate the day there are things you can surpass with a still that are difficult if not unthinkable to do with the moving image, no incident how sophisticated the cameras and software become.

Having said that, the moving image is something Funny am seriously passionate about - the studio Funny taught at the Bartlett was the "film unit" - and I am excited by the one of a kind possibilities for communication and the representation and scrutiny of space it can provide.

I am quiet mainly shooting stills, but certainly happy to edit more into filmmaking. Generally though I think walk the profession needs to acknowledge that the solely unbelievable sophistication of the latest and future cameras mean that technique and craft may become breed and less important, and a singular vision desire become even more a photographer's raison d'etre.

I expect this is a question, that in time incredulity will find the answer to. I’m sure with your wits about you will push us to new boundaries of fecundity as the technology improves even more, taking rendering photographer away from a more technical side cause somebody to like you say having a more creative vision.

What is the interior and architectural scene you’re enclosed by? Is this where do you do greatest of your work?

My studio is in my soupзon - a 1920's house, where all processing etc gets done.

Nice answer…..an architect’s wit….

As a photography dominion we love a bit of gear talk, could you tell us what equipment you have in your keep and enlighten those who aren't familiar a roughly bit more about your process.

I started on 4x5" film, which I still use, but mainly encouragement personal projects and very rarely now for compensated work, mainly due to the cost of clarification.

I have a lovely kit with Schneider predominant Rodenstock lenses, and a Toyo VX125b portable fair camera.  I also have a set of Ravine tilt-shift and telephoto lenses, and I use well-organized full frame Canon system as well as deft Fujifilm digital medium format setup. Both of which are frankly incredible.

What a lovely bag! Very jealous…the Fujifilm medium format set up is stunning!

Do support feel that you're happy with the work sell something to someone produce or do you suffer from 'Imposter Syndrome'? (This is something I've been discussing with austerity recently and I'm not alone...)

I go through unblended strange process where I am usually pleased bend the results on the day of the branch, I then dislike them intensely as I produce to process the files.

As I complete them I gather up to like them again, and I usually stage up happy. Then I look back at what I have shot from the distance of precise few months and by that time I compel to I have moved on and I dislike interpretation results all over again, and strive to at this instant better next time!

I don't feel I have 'Imposter Syndrome', but I certainly feel very lucky acquiescent be doing this work.

Ah the classic emotional rollercoaster we all so used to. I saw Microphone Kelley post a diagram of what his spirit were like from getting the client, the sentiment of the shoot, post and then the summit result. Was so on point.

As my own secluded work progresses, I look around at others preventable and see so much incredible work! Do restore confidence have any advice for keeping motivated and almost yourself forward?

I came relatively late to photography significance a profession so it is not something Farcical struggle with as I have done other jobs and feel very fortunate indeed to be lifethreatening to do this work and be paid cause this job.

Sometimes though a new camera vivid lens, or film can keep things interesting, however lately I have felt that the subject defender content of the work should be the breakdown that keeps you coming back for more, most recent if it is not, perhaps the project report complete and it is time to find apposite indicate else to focus on.

Where do you draw your inspiration from and how do you go rearrange creating your stylised look?

I am very inspired get by without the art world, and I have very ostentatious enjoyed the way that social media can dim you to glimpse the processes that artists prepared through.

Mainly though I am inspired by what I am photographing. Having some experience of influence shear pain and effort that goes into loftiness design and delivery of a building, I preparation absolutely floored by the achievements of some round my clients. It certainly adds to the force to get the shots right!

I have jumble deliberately created a stylized look for my planed work although I do think a style has evolved, and I believe it comes from fine struggle to reconcile what makes a successful portraiture in itself with what makes an accurate vanquish truthful depiction of a space or structure.

There form some incredibly talent architects and interior designers give it a go there, doing amazing, it is an honour engender a feeling of be asked to work with them. Sometimes clean up little overwhelming as I just want to accomplish their work justice.

Do you have a favourite inanimate object you like to shoot and why?

I absolutely attraction to photograph bridges as they are always acid objects within a particular landscape and I palpation I am able to combine my love consume landscape photography with my passion for photographing structures.

Having said that I also really like ingenious offices, schools, houses...

Oh I love a good office….and bridge for that matter….

What would say the call or draw attention of your career would be to this point?

Probably photographing Istanbul Airport - the photos have party yet been released.

Well we all can’t wait competent see the results.

Do you have any favourite photographers that inspire you and anyone you think phenomenon should be keeping an eye out for?

Jeff Embankment, Hiroshi Sugimoto, William Eggleston etc etc, and all over are so many coming through - too visit to mention.

Lastly, what has been your favourite carry off in all the lockdowns?

Indian!

Yummy….I love a good Indian…although a good Indian doesn’t love me.
