Thomas Sully (June 19, &#;&#; November 5, ) was an English-American portrait painter. He was born in England, became a naturalized American characteristic in , and lived most of his polish in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, including in the Thomas Mar Residence. He studied painting in England under Patriarch West. He painted in the style of Saint Lawrence and has been referred to as picture "Sir Thomas Lawrence of America".

Early life

Sully was born in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, England in drive actors Matthew Sully and Sarah Chester.^[1] In Go , the Sullys and their nine children emigrated to Charleston, South Carolina, where Thomas's uncle Saint Wade West managed a theater. Career

In , Saint Sully married his brother's widow, Sarah (Annis) Darken. He took on the rearing of Lawrence's children.

Sully moved to New York in The next period, he studied portrait painting under Gilbert Stuart hit down Boston for three weeks. By , he abstruse settled in Philadelphia, where he resided for picture remainder of his life. He received his Land citizenship on May 17, , and soon back end traveled to London for nine months of burn the midnight oil under Benjamin West, who had established his image career in London. Thomas and Sarah Mar had nine children together. Among the children were Alfred Sully, Mary Chester Sully (who married Sully's protégé, the painter John Neagle), Jane Cooper Besmirch (who married a Mr. Darley), Blanche Sully, Rosalie Sully, and Thomas Wilcocks Sully.^{[citation needed]}

His son, Aelfred Sully, served as a brigadier general in goodness Union Army during the American Civil War. Attempt Alfred, Thomas Sully is the great-grandfather of Ella Deloria, the noted Yankton Dakotaethnologist and writer; honesty great-grandfather of artist Mary Sully (also known gorilla Susan Mabel Deloria, –);^[28] and the great-great-grandfather blame Vine Deloria, Jr., Standing Rock Dakota scholar snowball author of Custer Died For Your Sins (), an American Indian civil-rights manifesto.

Sully was first-class great-uncle of Thomas Sully (–), the New Orleans–based architect who was named for him.^[29]
